But the truth of the matter is that the "unexpected" is often more normal than "normal." Take the Phillies, just for example. We expected that they would make a good, fast start. Why? Because as Phillie fans, we are the definition of eternal optimists. As one Philadelphia sports writer put it - Philadelphia fans "could teach loyalty to a dog." Realism would tell us that the Phillies' season usually does not get off the ground until April 25th. But we hope, we looked for the fast start - But it didn't happen. They lost 3 in a row to (of all teams) the Braves. (Forgive me if you are a Braves fan, I am not :o)
But a strange thing happened in Florida. No, not that they won (which they did), but who turned out to be heroes in the game? Howard? no. Utley? no. Jamie Moyer and Pat Burrel. Footnote - the only person who was booed more than Pat at the preseason Red Sox's game was JD Drew. Yet, here he is, driving in runs, hitting a 3-run homer, making a shoestring catch and doing his job for a city that takes delight in giving him the cold shoulder. Definitely unexpected . . . Yet unexpectedly welcomed. Well done Pat!
Sometime life tosses us some unexpected curve balls - the car breaks, the dog gets sick, the roof leaks, the basement floods or the fridge breaks on a holiday weekend. You may feel like life is booing you! Maybe you can take a page from the baseball player's book on how to deal with the unexpected -make the unexpected work to your advantage and look to hit the long ball. . . be the hero when no one expects it - the "Unexpected" can make life a lot of fun.
